BWM Members’ Trip: Batu Gajah: A Journey Through History & Heritage
Step into the history of Batu Gajah, Perak, on a one-day heritage trip with Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM).
Once shaped by the booming tin-mining industry, Batu Gajah grew into a town of historic buildings, civic institutions, places of worship and distinctive residential architecture. Its streets and heritage places tell stories of Perak’s past and the communities that helped shape the Kinta Valley.
Join us as we explore Batu Gajah, uncover its stories and take a closer look at the town’s built, cultural and industrial heritage.
Trip Highlights:
- Istana Raja Billah, Papan – Step inside this historic mansion. Enjoy special access inside Istana Raja Billah and discover its connections to the local community, Raja Billah and Perak’s tin-mining history.
- Rumah 1916 – A special tour of a beautifully restored historic home. Join Dato’ Zahim Albakri, Honorary Council Member of BWM and co-owner of Rumah 1916, for an exclusive tour of the house and an insight into its architecture, history and conservation journey.
- Batu Gajah Old Town Heritage Tour – Discover the lesser-known stories behind Batu Gajah’s historic buildings; Hospital Batu Gajah, Penjara Batu Gajah and Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah Kinta, while uncovering their roles in the development of Batu Gajah and the wider Kinta Valley.
- Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 (TT5) – Go behind the scenes of Malaysia’s tin-mining history. Enjoy a special guided tour of one of Malaysia’s last surviving tin dredges and learn how this remarkable piece of industrial heritage operated and shaped the Kinta Valley.
