This talk will examine the intersecting lives of Sutan Puasa and Abdullah Hukum, two pivotal Sumatran migrants who shaped the socio-economic foundations of 19th-century Kuala Lumpur. It will provide a rare, indigenous perspective on the transition from a frontier mining outpost to a colonial capital, highlighting the vital role of Sumatran leadership and infrastructure in the birth of Kuala Lumpur.
