Rimbun Dahan is a privately owned arts and cultural centre founded by architect Hijjas Kasturi and his wife, Angela Kasturi. Located just outside Kuala Lumpur, the compound sits within a 14-acre tropical garden in Selangor, thoughtfully designed to integrate art, architecture and nature. The visit will begin with a walk through the front garden, with a talk about the importance of natural heritage, the careful selection of plant species, and the roles they play in cultural development. The walk will continue to Taman Sari, the herb garden featuring plants traditionally used for perfume, cooking and medicine.

This visit will also include the two heritage houses relocated to the site — one from Parit, Perak, and another from Jalan Perak, Georgetown, accompanied by an explanation of the reasons and considerations behind reconstructing these traditional houses at Rimbun Dahan, highlighting the importance of preserving architectural heritage within a living landscape

ABOUT THE BOOK

Described as the “Leo Tolstoys’ War & Peace for Straits Chinese” by Prof Lien-Hang Nguyen of Columbia University, As Equals takes readers on a sweeping journey into the lives of Hui-lan, Ida, and Lucy – wives and daughters of Oei Tiong-ham, Asia’s wealthiest man of the early 20th century. From the outpost of the European empire in Southeast Asia, to Belle Epoque Europe, to Nationalist China during the warlord period, and all the way to 20th century America, these three women forged a path that broke free from gender and cultural stereotypes. They flew planes, managed Asia’s most opulent estates, charmed the West with their impeccable sense of style and sophistication, and boldly challenged traditional gender roles while navigating the racial tensions prevalent during the era. In so doing, they paved the way for countless other women to follow in their footsteps.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Daryl Yeap is the author of As Equals: The Oei Women of Java. For most of her career she worked in the finance industry as a banking analyst for various financial institutions, before joining her family company. Her first book, The King’s Chinese, tells the story of the Straits British-Chinese immigrants, told through the life of her great-grandfather Yeap Chor Ee. She is now an independent researcher in her spare time.

The Little India consists of Market Street, known as the Kadai Teru or the street of shops by early Tamils in Penang. It is known as Ellammuchanthee among the Tamil community and the British called it Chola Place of Little Madras. Queen Street is largely dominated by the Tamil Indian Muslims involved in the import -export business, are jewellers, money changers, as well as operators of restaurants, tea and food stalls, newspaper stalls and stevedoring. The Muslim food vendors do not sell beef as a sign of respect to the residing deity of Queen Street in the Maha Mariamman Temple; this respect extends to the Hindu Communities within Little India.

The Wet Plate Collodion: A Demonstration of a Historical Photographic Process by Dr. K. Azril Ismail

ABOUT THE TALK

The talk will discuss the historical photographic process before the era of manufactured photographic celluloid films and gelatin silver prints as practised by early pioneers such as Sachtler & Co, Carter & Co, Kleingrothe, Henry Schuren, G.A. Schleesselmann, the famous G.R. Lambert & Co., and various other Europeans who opened studios in Singapore and Penang where they carried out work in Kedah, Malacca, and Borneo. The extraordinary images of “Old Malaya”, which we often regard with a sense of nostalgia, romanticised (or colonialised, depending on one’s political perspective) various aspects of our people and places through this visual representation.

In this talk, Dr. Azril will look at how these extraordinary images were made – from the clear glass coated with a thin layer of collodion salt solution, then immersed in a silver bath solution rendering it light sensitive, to exposing and developing it in-situ, either as a negative, or a positive (ambrotype).

In addition, Dr. Azril will do a brief demonstration replicating this process using an antique camera and an adapted mobile darkroom, with similar chemicals used in the 19th century process, to develop the plate on the spot.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. K. Azril Ismail is currently the Head of the Postgraduate Research & Development Programme for the Institute of Creative Arts & Design in UCSI, Kuala Lumpur. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Plymouth, for his visual studies of the Pudu Jail’s Graffiti (this portfolio is now on display at Badan Warisan Malaysia until 30 March 2019), having also graduated from UiTM (MA, Art & Design), and Columbus College of Art & Design, Ohio (BFA in Media Studies). An accomplished practising photographer and academic, Dr. Azril’s work has been featured in international exhibitions and published widely in art & photography magazines and journals

Book

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The book reveals the forgotten contributions of Charles Reade, the pioneer Government Town Planner of British Malaya (1921-1929). Reade was responsible for town planning in Kuala Lumpur and other towns of the Federated Malay States through the 1920s. His contributions touched the lives of coolie lines, government worker’s housing, the reservation of public grounds connected with the proclamation of Malaya Independence from British rule and other sites and buildings of national landmark and heritage – all of these contributions are largely unknown amongst the general public. His planning ideas were in advance of their time and consequently Reade faced much opposition to his planning legislation which was meant to guide and regulate building and town extensions. One of his most enduring legacies is the planning and design of Kuala Kubu Bharu township –Malaya’s first Garden City township along similar lines of the Garden Cities and Town Planning Associations of Great Britain. The talk will highlight some of his contributions in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Kuala Kubu Bharu etc.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Kamalruddin Shamsudin (the past Deputy Director General of the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning) will talk about his latest book (2015), entitled: “Charles Reade: Town Planning British Malaya – A Story of the forgotten contributions of an ardent Garden City enthusiast of early twentieth century Malaya.” The book is based on his 25 years of intermittent research.

Dr. Christine Garnaut, who is the current Vice-President/President-elect of the International Planning History Society, will provide an overview of Charles Reade’s background and his global contributions. She has researched and written about Reade in South Australia and elsewhere. Reade’s work touched the lives of many people from Great Britain, Australia, Malaya, Northern Rhodesia and South Africa.
