About The Talk
This talk shall be on the traditional Malay house as found in the various states of Peninsular Malaysia. It shall be an introduction to the vernacular architecture of this region which has been honed to near perfection in terms of climatic control, through centuries of living in harmony and sustainably with the local hot and humid tropical climate.
The traditional Malay house is the physical manifestation of the creative and aesthetic skills of Malay craftsmen and forms part of Malaysia’s built cultural heritage. The Malay house embodies the way of life and incorporates the various social and cultural requirements of the Malays. This architecture has regional variations, multifunctional spaces, design flexibility and a prefabrication system which can extend the house to suit the growing needs of the occupants.
The forces of change through modern development, urbanisation plus cultural and social values, have threatened the traditional Malay house form’s continued existence into the future. Many valuable lessons can be gleaned from this beautiful vernacular architecture to fulfil the present and future housing needs of ordinary Malaysians. It will certainly help in defining and developing a more Malaysian identity in architecture.
