Ujana Warisan

12 March 2024

Announcing Ujana Warisan – Badan Warisan Malaysia’s (BWM) new collaborative project exploring Malaysia’s unique culinary heritage, on our grounds at No. 2 Jalan Stonor.

As part of our commitment to the stewardship of this vital green space in the heart of the city, we have developed a project further enhancing both the bio-diversity and the heritage value of the site. The Ujana Warisan project is centred around the cultivation and use of traditional Ulam (herbs), with the creation of an educational and experiential on-site Ulam Garden, part of which will be open to the public.

Our chosen partner for this venture is Dusun Asia Sdn Bhd (DASB), the company behind OpenHouse Restaurant, famed for food that celebrates native ingredients and for reviving lost recipes. DASB will be creating a restaurant on our grounds that will draw both ingredients and inspiration from the Ulam Garden, reflecting a commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the whole project. Dr Eric Olmedo, researcher at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), will be lending his expertise in the creation of the garden and in helping visitors learn about as well as taste the rich diversity of local, edible plants.

Ujana Warisan will be a garden oasis amidst the skyscrapers of KL, a collaborative space for BWM with DASB to reach out to the community with a rich program of educational and cultural events including talks, tours and regular farmers’ markets. BWM is proud to begin this new project that will enable our Heritage Center to continue to serve as a community hub and an attractive destination for visitors and locals alike.

BWM Heritage Centre is located in one of the last 1920s colonial bungalows in Kuala Lumpur, alongside the Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, a traditional Malay wooden house and popular tourist attraction. The buildings are surrounded by a Heritage Garden which was extensively revitalised in 2004.
