About the ‘Emporium’ by Rose Gan, Volume III of ‘Penang Chronicles’
Historical fiction series featuring Captain Francis Light, his partner Martinha Rozells, and their children accompanied by a host of authentic 18th century characters from the Straits and beyond. Dragon, Pearl and Emporium bring a fresh look to an old story, with some unexpected surprises. Meticulously researched and richly imagined, Penang Chronicles closely follows the historical narrative and recreates the peoples of the region, especially Martinha, to set them at the forefront of their own story.
Emporium: Penang’s meteoric rise from deserted island to thriving port continues at astonishing pace. Fortunes are made in shipping, commerce and plantations, settlers flock in from the region and beyond. But paradise comes at a price. The East India Company has second thoughts; the Dutch and French both set their sights on the island, while the Sultan of Queddah rages at British treachery. As Light prepares for war, beset with problems at home and abroad, his wife Martinha must learn for herself how to negotiate the murky waters of colonial prejudice for the sake of her family.
December 8, 2023 is the official 50th anniversary of the twinning of George Town and Adelaide as sister cities both established by members of the Light family. There are several events in Penang and Adelaide around this time to commemorate the event (including Rose Gan’s lecture at Penang Institute on 8 December 2023 at 8 pm)
